EU Calls for Emergency Summit on Mideast Conflict

The European Union (EU) countries Friday will call for the holding of an emergency summit on the Middle East on Saturday in Cairo, Egypt, which should be participated by Israelis and Palestinians as well as an EU representative, said sources close to the EU informal summit being held in Biarritz.

The proposal was made by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, said a Spanish government spokesman.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, who is here to discuss with EU foreign ministers the high tension in the Middle East, said in an interview with the U.S. television network CNN that such a summit is "possible."

EU leaders are expected to issue a declaration on Friday on the situation in the Middle East, which went to the brink of war Thursday after the lynching of at least two Israeli soldiers and reataliatory air strikes of Israel against Palestinian targets.
