FM Spokesman on Israel-Palestine Conflict

China Friday voiced deep concern over the escalation of conflict between Israel and Palestine following an attack of Israeli fighter helicopters on the Palestinian autonomous region on October 12.

Foreign ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao today cited President Jiang Zemin's separate verbal messages to President Yasser Arafat and Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday, reiterating that violent conflicts can only deepen mutual hatred, while hope and peace can only be realized through negotiation and dialogue.

China sincerely hopes that both sides will exercise restraint, take immediate action to prevent the situation from further deteriorating, and bring the negotiations back on track as soon as possible, the spokesman said
