East China to Increase Train Speed AgainTrains in east China will run faster than ever starting October 21 to improve the way the railway system operates overall. The increase in speed will expand the transport capability of the current railway system and improve efficiency, said Zhang Cunxin, deputy head of Shanghai Railway Bureau. Shanghai is the transport hub and control center of the railway system in east China. Train speed from Shanghai to Hangzhou, capital of east Zhejiang Province, will rise from 120 kilometers per hour to 140. The rate of travel from Hangzhou to Nanchang, capital of south Jiangxi Province, will run at 110 kilometers per hour compared with the present 90. Most of the major changes take place on trains from Shanghai to Urumchi, capital of northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to Xi'an, capital of northwest Shaanxi Province, and to Chengdu, capital of southwest Sichuan Province. The time span to complete the journey to the three destinations will be cut 13 hours or one-fifth, eight hours or one-third and six hours respectively. Shanghai Railway Bureau has decided to bring in seven passenger trains, up from current 194 to 201, and 51 freight trains, up from 1,174 to 1,225. With the newly completed Wuhu Yangtze Road-Railway Bridge opened to traffic, freight conveyance volume on Beijing-Guangzhou route has declined, which makes eight new passenger trains and two baggage-parcel trains available to be put into operation on the route, according to Zhang. The increase in speed are in concurrence with the improvement of service. New locomotives and new air-conditioned cars are to be used. There are fifty-six stations under the bureau which are inter-connected and passengers can book tickets to any of their destinations at any of the stations.
