In a written statement distributed at the Dresden International Airport upon the arrival, Wei, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, said the German nation is a great nation, and that China and Germany enjoy good relations as the Chinese and German peoples have a long history of contacts.

The CPC and the SDP of Germany have had friendly exchanges and dialogue since the early 1980s, Wei said.

He expressed the hope that the current visit would promote friendship between the two peoples, enhance their exchanges and cooperation, boost the exchange and cooperation between the CPC and the SDP, as well as the long-term and stable relations of all-round cooperation between the two countries.

Wei said he is looking forward to meeting Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, General Secretary of the SDP Franz Muentefering and other leaders in or out of office to exchange views on a wide range of issues of common concern, and learn from Germany's experience in social and economic development.

Greeting Wei and his party at the airport were SDP officials and Lu Qiutian, Chinese ambassador to Germany.
