China's Largest Pilot GPRS Network Opens

Ericsson and Guangdong Mobile Communication Co. Ltd (GMCC) jointly launched China's largest General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) trial network in Guangdong recently.

The network, covering Guangzhou and Shenzhen, will enable GMCC to offer high-speed wireless data communications services, such as WAP access, e-mail, on-line games for GPRS handset users in the two cities.

Communications. General Packet Radio Service technology reduces the cost of operators, effectively makes use of wireless frequency spectrums and offers a higher bandwidth for customer access.

In light of the complex mobile telecommunication network and huge mobile population in the two cities, the experiences and expertise gained from the GPRS commercial trial network in Guangdong can be used for reference in future deployments and the promotion of new GPRS networks in other parts of the country.
