Barshefsky Flies In to Untangle China WTO BidTop US trade negotiator Charlene Barshefsky arrived in Beijing on Thursday to meet Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji in an attempt to sort out problems in Beijing's bid to join the World Trade Organisation.European and US trade officials say China's bid to join the WTO before year end is in doubt after talks in Geneva last month stalled over how Beijing would implement rules on intellectual property and meet other obligations. Adding to the urgency, U.S. President Bill Clinton wants to bring China into the WTO before his term ends in January next year, they say. Barshefsky was scheduled to meet Zhu before he flies off to Japan later on Thursday. |
