Italy Suggests Rome as Venue For Middle East TalksThe Italian government suggested Rome as a suitable venue for the possible continuation of Middle East peace talks, Italian Premier Giuliano Amato told the Lower House on Wednesday. But Amato noted that the decision of talking place is not up to Italy, adding that there was "complex diplomatic work" going ahead on the Middle East and Italy was awaiting a reply to its offer. He said Rome had been offered as a venue "if it should be considered useful." Italian news agency Ansa reported that Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini echoed Amato's willingness on Wednesday in Strasbourg, saying that there was a "concrete possibility" for the resumption of dialog and Rome might be the right place for this to happen. Talks in Paris and Egypt have so far failed to halt the violence in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and Jerusalem that have claimed about 90 lives. |
