A Booming Tertiary Industry Developed in China

During the 9th Five-year Plan period (1996-2000), a booming tertiary industry has developed in China. According to statistics from the State Development Planning Commission, by yearend of 1999, a radio and TV coverage of 90.4% and 91.6% was respectively reported in China along with a populace of as many as 70 million of CATV users known as the largest to the world.

In 1999, goods turnover by various transportation means in China reached 4117 billion tons per kilometer.

During the first four years of the 9th Five-year Plan period, tourism earnings by China grew to US$14.1 billion from US$10.2 billion, ranking seventh in the world; home travelers numbered 720 million with a tourism spending of RMB$ 283.1 billion yuan.

In 1999, China's housing sales amounted to a worth of RMB$120.2 billion yuan, including RMB$89.19 billion yuan by individuals, 74.2% of the national.

China's insurance premium in 1999 stood at RMB$140.6 billion yuan, compensations and sundry payments made amounting to 51 billion yuan.

In 1999, a total of RMB$94.1 billion yuan were raised by issuing and distributing stocks in China, 6.3 times the amount of money raised during the last Five-year Plan period. Chinese companies having got listed were placed at 976, three times the late period of the 8th Five-year Plan years.
