Chinese Youth Urged to Join Space ResearchSpace conquest has been the stuff of Chinese legends for thousands of years. Now, Chinese youth are encouraged to be well-prepared to participate in the development of their country's fledgling aerospace industry.Luan Enjie, vice-minister of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and, concurrently, deputy director of the State Aerospace Bureau, made the remarks at a book donation ceremony held here Tuesday. "The future of China's aerospace industry lies on you, the younger generation," Luan told several high school students while autographing books for them. At the ceremony, the Chinese preparatory committee for the celebration of the World Space Week donated two newly-published books on the development of global aerospace technology to the National Library and several universities and high schools in Beijing. Dozens of Chinese scientists including senior members of science academies, collaborated on the books, according to Luo Ge, chief editor of the two books and director of the office of the preparatory committee. Luo said in November 1999, the United Nations accepted a proposal at the Third UN Outer Space Meeting to celebrate World Space Week from October 4-10 every year. This year, the first year to mark the festival, the United Nations will hold celebrations in New York and Vienna, while the governments of at least 26 countries will hold their own programs to mark the event, according to Luo. Apart from the book donation, China's programs also include a space technology exhibition at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution in Beijing from September 28 to October 12 and a conference that was held at Beijing University on October 4, the official said. |
