State Council Spokesman on Taiwan Affairs

Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said Wednesday the improvement of cross-Strait relations is the common wish of the people across the Taiwan Strait.

He made remarks an interview with Xinhua when commenting on remarks made by the Taiwan authorities yesterday.

He said the one-China principle is the basis for stability and development of the cross-Straits relations.

He said he hope that the Taiwan authorities will comply with the people's desire and face up to the reality instead of avoiding it.

He said the Taiwan authorities should definitely recognize the consensus, reached by the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait of the mainland and the Strait Exchanges Foundation of Taiwan in 1992, that both sides of the Taiwan Strait adhere to the one-China principle.

He urged the Taiwan authorities to take concrete measures to improve the cross-Strait relations.
