Education One of Focuses of HK Policy: Tung

Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), said here Wednesday that his government would attach importance to education to meet challenges of the knowledge-based new economy.

Tung said in his Policy Address of 2000 that "I plan to focus on three major issues of public concern -- education, poverty and governance."

"It is widely recognized that innovation and technology are essential to enhance productivity for our sustained economic growth," he said at the Legislative Council.

The HKSAR government should provide educational opportunities to people in all strata of society in order to bridge the knowledge divide so that everyone stands a chance of succeeding in the new economy, Tung said.

He said that the HKSAR government is committed to carrying out education reforms.
