Hong Kong, Macao Thrive after Returning HomeChina's reunification during the Ninth Five-Year Plan period made a historical step forward with the successful return of Hong Kong and Macao.Since the Chinese Government resumed its sovereignty over Hong Kong and Macao, the "one country, two systems" principle has been judged a success. Under the framework of "one country, two systems" and the policies of "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong," "Macao people governing Macao," and a high degree of autonomy, Hong Kong and Macao have achieved remarkable results in maintaining social stability and prosperity. During the three years since the return of Hong Kong, the Basic Law has been fully implemented, paving the way for the smooth operation of Hong Kong's own social, economic, legal, administrative, legislative and judicial systems. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, headed by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, has shown its wisdom and capability in dealing with complicated situations. Hong Kong has secured its status as the world's financial, trade and shipping centre, one of the world's safest cities and a free port. It still boasts one of the world's most liberal and dynamic economic systems. Up to the end of 1999, Hong Kong's local output value reached HK$1230.43 billion (US$157 billion) and the total trade value reached HK$2741.72 billion (US$351 billion). Now, more and more Hong Kong people believe the mainland is the best support for the further development of Hong Kong. The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) government, headed by Edmund Ho Hao-wah, has taken the reigns with confidence in under a year. Ho pointed out, in his first policy address after being sworn in as chief executive last December, that the government aimed to lay solid foundations and seek potential for steady development. The MSAR government is strengthening its contacts with neighbouring areas to carry out a rapid, effective and severe crackdown on crime. Public security in Macao has made remarkable achievements. The economy in Macao has tided it over its most difficult period and is now slowly strengthening. The number of tourists to Macao is expected to reach 8 million this year, a significant growth from last year, and Macao's industry and finance outlook is bright for the future. Hong Kong and Macao's return to the motherland encourages all Chinese people, including the Taiwanese, to have confidence in the complete reunification of China. [Source: chinadaily]
