Project Environmentally Friendly
A forest protection project in the
Tibet
Autonomous Region in the upper reaches of Yangtze River was approved by the State Forestry Administration yesterday.
A special forest protection zone, covering 1.219 million hectares, will be built over the coming 11 years. The State plans to invest 570 million yuan (US$68 million) in it.
Sources with the administration said that the project will help retain the biological balance in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and keep soil from being eroded away in the Three Gorges region. When finished, the project will increase 39.3 per cent of forest areas in the region and decrease 1.03 million tons of soil erosion.
