No National Day Travel for College Students

While local citizens scurried to scenic spots during the 7-day National Day holiday from October 1 to 7, college students in the city sought other forms of relaxation.

In the leading Nanjing University, most graduates of the Chinese Department chose to stay on campus. With a newspaper or magazine in hand, they strolled along the quiet paths of the campus or lay chatting on lawn -- a familiar sight at many Nanjing colleges.

Some students made plans before the holiday to visit far corners of Nanjing where 10 historical dynasties founded their capitals. Students from the Humanities School under local Dongnan University were exploring alleyways in the city's old district in the south. They referred to this activity as "retracing historical footsteps."

Half of the students from one class of the Humanities School under Nanjing Normal University spent their holiday in the countryside with farmers, learning how to farm land and getting a taste of the hardships of the peasants' lives.
