Beijing Sees Holiday Consumption BoomBeijing experienced a surge in consumption during the seven-day National Day vacation, the local commerce commission said Monday.Retail stores sold 450 million yuan (54 million U.S. dollars worth of goods during the holiday, up 26.7 percent from the same period last year, and the total takings from catering service was 127 million yuan (15.3 million U.S. dollars), up 20.5 percent, according to statistics from 24 large and medium-sized marketplaces and 50 restaurants. The main trends in the holiday consumption period were: new shopping centers and new stores were most attractive; sales of new in-season products topped all commodities; goods from historically famed shops and of Beijing flavor were popular; tourism and commercial activities were combined; and market prices were stable. Wangfujing, Xidan and Dasilan, the three most reputed shopping centers in Beijing, received more visitors than elsewhere. The newly opened Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore sold 40,000 books on October 1, worth 760,000 yuan (91,600 U.S. dollars). The Wangfujing Department Store, Beijing's most prestigious, recorded the highest sales revenue with 41 million yuan (4.9 million U.S. dollars). New Century Store of Caibai Company, known as the Number one gold shop, sold 10 million yuan (1.2 million U.S.dollars) worth of gold and jewellery. |
