China Seeking Telecom Opportunities in Africa

China's telecommunication equipment providers are keeping an eye on the emerging African market and hope to further promote relationships with their African partners in the China-African Co-operation Forum scheduled to open Tuesday.

"The African market will be our next business hub," Tuesday's Chinadaily quoted Li Taifong as saying. Li is chairman of ZTE Corp, one of China's top four telecom equipment manufacturers.

He said that many African countries are investing huge sums of money in upgrading their basic infrastructure and many Chinese firms are keen for a piece of the action.

"Currently China is the second biggest telecom market and its experience will help and guide other developing countries," said Kerstin Leitner, chief representative of the United Nations Development Program to China.

Chinese companies' "going to Africa" plans have also got strong support from the government.

"China and developing countries in Africa should improve cooperation in the information technology sector to narrow the digital gap between developing and developed countries," said Lou Qinjian, vice-minister of Information Industry.

The other three of China's top four telecom manufacturers are all showing a keen interest in Africa.
