Clinton to Sign Bill on PNTR for China Tuesday
US President Bill Clinton is going to sign a bill on permanent normal trade relations status (PNTR) for China on Tuesday, the White House announced on Monday.
The PNTR bill will be signed at a White House ceremony attended by House and Senate Republican leaders and top Democratic supporters of the bill, White House spokeswoman Nanda Chitre said.
Once the legislation is signed by President Clinton, the
United States
will terminate its practice of reviewing China's "most-favored-nation (MFN)" status on an annual basis according to the relevant articles of the 1974 Trade Act.
The US Senate passed the PNTR bill by a vote of 83-15 after a heated debate on September 19.
The bill was approved by the US House of Representatives by a vote of 237-197 on May 24.
