Iran Condemns Israel, Expresses Disbelief in Peace Process

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned the "brutalities" committed by Israeli security forces against Palestinians, noting that "peace with Israel is but a mirage."

The recent clashes in the Israeli-occupied lands are due to the regime's expansionist policies and the United States support given to this usurping government, spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi was quoted by the Islamic Republic News Agency as saying.

He said the recent Israeli atrocities demonstrate the fact that the "Zionist regime" will spare no efforts in implementing its aggressive policies.

The spokesman also deplored the idea of peace with Israel, saying there is no possibility that a just peace and restoration of Palestinian rights could ever be achieved.

About 90 Palestinians or Israeli Arabs have been killed and about 2,000 more wounded in 12 days of clashes in the West Bank, Gaza and Israel.

The bloodshed was triggered by right-wing Israeli opposition Likud party leader Ariel Sharon's provocative visit to the Islamic holy site , Al-Aqsa Mosque, in East Jerusalem on September 28.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, currently chairman of the 56-member Organization of the Islamic Conference, has called for an emergency meeting of the organization's foreign ministers to coordinate their efforts to support Palestine and confront Israel.
