Beijing to Host Int'l Crime Prevention MeetingJudges, prosecutors, police officers, lawyers and legal experts from 68 countries and regions will gather in Beijing on October 11-15 to seek ways to enhance crime prevention and criminal justice.They will also explore ways to fight crimes committed with the aid of the Internet and other high-tech means and discuss the function of prosecutors in modern society and the role of the criminal justice system in alleviating poverty. Delegates from the United Nations and other international organizations will also attend the Eighth World Conference of Asia Crime Prevention Foundation. Chinese President Jiang Zemin has sent a letter of congratulation to participants of the conference, saying that by exchanging experiences on crime prevention, delegates from different countries will be able to enhance cooperation in fighting crimes and contribute to social progress and economic development in the 21st century. Jiang pointed out that cross-border crimes have been on the rise in recent years due to globalization, and joint efforts should be increased to seek countermeasures. He said that the Chinese government has always paid attention to crime prevention in the course of economic development and has made some achievements in this respect.
