Beijing Expands Cultural Facilities

Beijing is securing its image as a national cultural center with the opening of the super-sized Wangfujing Bookstore in the city's downtown.

In recent years, the municipal government completed construction or renovation of Chang'an Grand Theater, the Concert Hall of Zhongshan Park, the Capital Theater, Beijing Broadcasting Mansion, the China Millennium Monument and the Capital Library.

Future construction projects in the Chinese capital include the Capital Museum, Xidan Theater, Jixiang Theater and another television broadcasting center.

During the past five years, the local government poured more than two billion yuan (241 million U.S. dollars) into the new public cultural facilities, with a combined floor space of 250,000 square meters.

Beijing's scheme is to give a powerful boost to the cultural and entertainment industries, which are to become new economic pillars for the city, the newspaper said.

Statistics show that the city's cultural and entertainment industries, with fixed assets worth 20.06 billion yuan, have 184,400 employees. The industries annually create added value of 7.47 billion yuan, or 3.8 percent of Beijing's gross domestic product.
