Four Given Jail Terms for Boat AccidentA Chinese court has sentenced four people, responsible for a major boat accident that killed 130 people in June this year, to prison for five to seven years.Investigators found that the ferry boat, which capsized on the Yangtze River on June 22, was overloaded, navigated in foggy conditions and broke operating rules. The Hejiang County People's Court on Saturday sentenced Liang Yingjin, the boat owner, Zhou Shoujin, the captain, and Liang Rubing who manages the boat by contract, to seven years in prison. The fourth person involved was the engineer, Shi Ping, who was given a five-year jail term. The boat belonged to a construction company of Hejiang County, in southwestern China's Sichuan Province. When the accident took place, 221 people were tossed into the water. The trial started on September 15. |
