Another Kidnapped Victim Freed in Southern Philippines

Another Chinese Filipino was released by his kidnappers in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao on Saturday after 20 days in captivity.

The 28-year-old Chinese Filipino trader, seized in Cotabato city, Maguindanao, on September 18, was turned over by the abductors to emissaries of the former mayor of the nearby town of Sultan Kudarat, the Philippines News Agency reported Sunday.

His release came after former town mayor Tocao Mastura, a member of an influential Muslim clan in Maguindanao, warned the kidnappers that two of their gang members caught by the police last Wednesday would be executed, it said.

On Friday, policemen rescued a 14-year-old boy in Sultan Kudarat after a brief firefight with his captors.

The boy, a son of a wealthy Chinese Filipino trader in the neighboring province of North Cotabato, was abducted in front of his school in Midsayap, North Cotabato, last Wednesday.

The authorities are now working for the possible rescue of another Chinese Filipino trader in Cotabato city who was kidnapped in Sultan Kudarat on September 14.
