Vojislav Kostunica Sworn-in as Yugoslav President

Vojislav Kostunica was sworn-in as Yugoslav President before a joint session of the parliament late Saturday.

He told the parliament that he will fulfill the constitution and protect the integrity, sovereignty and independence of Yugoslavia.

Under the constitution, the 56-year-old Kostunica will name a prime minister who is expected to appoint an interim government.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the Sava Center outside the city center, instead of the Federal parliament building which was damaged during the mass demonstration Thursday.

Before the ceremony, the 138 lower house and 40 upper house deputies held separate sessions to confirm the results of the September 24 elections.
