Premier Zhu on Importance of Fostering Talent

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Saturday stressed the importance of fostering talent for China's reform and opening-up drive.

It is of both importance and urgency that China improves education, trains more high-calibre personnel and brings their talents into full play, said Zhu at an inauguration ceremony for the Advisory Committee of Qinghua University's School of Economics and Management. Zhu is also president of the school.

China needs a large contingent of well-trained people specializing in science and technology and management, he noted, adding that China is at a critical period of adjusting its economic structure and deepening reform, and the opening-up drive will also enter a new phase.

Zhu said that the advisory committee aims to strengthen the links between his school, well-known enterprises and economic management schools at home and abroad.

With help from the committee, the School of Economics and Management at Qinghua University will gain more management expertise from successful enterprises, and learn new teaching methods and syllabus from top management schools, Zhu added.

He urged the school to strengthen teaching, increase academic research and further international cooperation, while maintaining close links with domestic enterprises.

The premier expressed full confidence in the future of his school.

The new high-profile advisory committee consists of more than 30 presidents of famous consortia and well-known scholars. The School of Economics and Management of Qinghua University was set up in 1984, aiming to become one of the top economic schools in the world.
