11,000 HK Civil Servants Apply to Leave under Voluntary Retirement Scheme

About 11,000 civil servants of Hong Kong of the 59 designated grades identified or anticipated staff surplus have applied to leave the civil service under the Voluntary Retirement (VR) Scheme when the application period closed on October 3.

The departments with largest number of VR-takers are the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (3,300 applications), the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (1,200 applications) and the Department of Health (1,100 applications).

"Heads of Department and Heads of Grade will process the applications in the next few weeks," Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph W P Wong said Saturday.

"In considering the applications, they will ensure that the provision and quality of public services will not be adversely affected," he added.

"We will pay particular attention to the training and development needs of the vast majority of staff of the VR grades, who choose to remain in the service."

"Training programs will be organized to enable staff facing redeployment and job-transition to acquire requisite skills to perform effectively and efficiently in their new jobs and for further career development in the Civil Service," said Wong.
