HK Govt Promote Harmonious Labor Relations in SMEs

The Labor Department of Hong Kong will launch a large-scale campaign entitled "Labor Relations -Small and Medium-sized Enterprises 2000" Sunday to promote harmonious labor relations in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The six-week program will feature a series of activities to help SMEs better understand the Employment Ordinance (EO) and good people management practices.

"There are about 298,000 SMEs in Hong Kong. They have pivotal influence on Hong Kong's economy as they engage about 60 percent of the total number of persons employed in the territory," said Pamela Tan Kam Mi-wah, commissioner for labor, Saturday.

"Harmonious labor relations in SMEs will be conducive to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong," she added.

"Effective human resource management does not necessarily require sophisticated systems, well-trained experts and intensive capital investment. SMEs can accomplish harmonious labor relations by adhering to three principles.

"The first principle is to be employee-oriented, i.e. to attach importance to employees' participation to enhance their sense of belonging, to respect employees' opinions to boost their morale, and to provide staff with appropriate training to enhance productivity.

"The second principle is to be law-abiding so that employees will feel secure and protected, be committed to their jobs and trust and support their companies.

"The third principle is to be fair and equal so as to ensure equal opportunities in employment. Employees would consequently, be willing to make contribution to their companies," Tan said.
