China Expands Foreign TradeFollowing are the facts and figures about China's foreign trade in the Ninth Five-year Plan period (1996-2000), provided by the State Development Planning Commission.China's total foreign trade volume for goods increased 128 percent from 280.8 billion U.S. dollars in 1995 to 360.6 billion U.S. dollars in 1999, ranking ninth in the world. The export volume for goods rose 131.1 percent from 148.7 billion U.S. dollars in 1995 to 194.9 billion U.S. dollars in 1999, while the import volume for goods jumped 125 percent from 132.1 billion to 165.7 billion U.S. dollars. The total foreign trade volume for services picked up from 44.3 billion U.S. dollars in 1995 to 55.1 billion U.S. dollars, up 1.24 times. The export volume for services totaled 23.8 billion U.S. dollars, 1.25 times over 1995, and the import volume reached 31.3 billion, 1.24 times over 1995. |
