China Capital University of Medicine Marks 40th BirthdayBeijing's medical workers Saturday took part in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of Capital the University of Medical Sciences (CUM).With 11 affiliated hospitals in Beijing, the higher-learning medical school is mainly engaged in training professionals for the medical, pharmaceutical and health industries in the national capital. The Ministry of Health has just approved CUM to open the country's first training center for general practitioners. The center will provide the urgently-needed medical workers for community medical services in Chinese cities. At today's ceremony, Xu Qunyuan, president of the university, said that CUM will continue to cultivate qualified clinicians, while improving research on medical treatment, prevention methods for infectious diseases and preclinical medicine. With over 18,000 medical workers and staff faculties, CUM has made progress in the study of neuroscience and healing health care. It has scored outstanding achievements in the research on Parkinson's disease through surgery and genetherapy. Wu Jieping, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and also the first president of the school attended the meeting with representatives from domestic and foreign institutes, including the State University of New York at Buffalo and the Lowell Art and Sciences of Massachusetts, who have academic exchanges with CUM.
