China Attracts More Foreign Funds

Following are the facts and figures about the overseas investment China has attracted in the Ninth Five-year Plan period (1996-2000), provided by the State Development Planning Commission.

Overseas investment in China totaled 230 billion U.S. dollars from 1996 to 1999 and is expected to top 290 billion U.S. dollars in the five-year period, soaring by 80 percent from the last Five-year Plan period.

Overseas companies invested 184.5 billion U.S. dollars in China from 1996 to 1999 and the total investment from overses companies in these five years will reach 230 billion U.S. dollars, doubling from the last Five-year Plan period.

Investment from overseas companies totaled 52.4 billion U.S. dollars in 1997, the highest in the country's history.

The country got a total foreign loan of 46 billion U.S. dollars from 1996 to 1999 and the foreign loan is expected to total 57 billion U.S. dollars in these five years, up 25 percent over the last Five-year Plan period.

The country's payment and debt rate remained 11.3 percent and 69.5 percent respectively in 1999, both below the international warning line.
