Himalayan Nature Reserve Center Founded

The Himalayan Nature Reserve Center was recently inaugurated in Xigaze Prefecture in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The 1,800-square-meter center was built using 3 million yuan offered by an American fund. It will be used for training, accommodation and exhibitions.

The 38,000-square-kilometer Himalayan Nature Reserve comprises Tingri, Dinggye, Nyalam and Gyirong counties. It was designated as the regional nature reserve in 1989 and listed by the State Council as a state-class nature reserve in 1994.

Over the past decade, a number of environmental, solar energy and drinking water projects have been built in the zone with 5 million U.S. dollars from seven international organizations and 10 million yuan from the regional government.

It was rated as one of the 50 best community projects by the United Nations in 1998.
