Peruvian Congress Approves Bill Cutting President's Term

Peru's Congress Thursday passed a constitutional amendment cutting short the terms of both the incumbent president and parliament members, official sources said.

Congress also passed a measure prohibiting future presidents from serving two consecutive five-year terms.

The amendment, approved by 102 votes in favor, one against and 6 abstentions, was presented by President Alberto Fujimori after an accord was reached to end the country's political crisis arising from the corruption scandal involving Fujimori's former advisor Vladimiro Montesinos.

Montesinos is currently in Panama, seeking political asylum.
