Xinhua Commentator Hails Patriotism

A Xinhua commentator's article Tuesday eulogized the patriotism aroused by the great achievements accomplished by Chinese athletes at the 27th Olympic Games.

The article, titled "hold high the banner of patriotism and march into the new century", said that every time the Chinese national flag was hoisted in Sydney, accompanied by the national anthem, a wave of patriotism swept across China.

The Chinese nation has a fine patriotic tradition and the Chinese civilization runs deep, the commentary said, adding that patriotism has been the major power source behind China's development and progress for thousands of years.

The theory of building socialism with Chinese characteristics has greatly enriched patriotism during this new era, the commentator said.

Chinese sportsmanship is an integral part of the socialist ethical and cultural progress, the article said.

The article called on the whole nation to learn from the athletes and glorify patriotism in a bid to realize the great objective of revitalizing the Chinese nation.
