Russian, Indian leaders Holds Intensive Talks

Visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin held "intensive discussions" on a wide-range of global, regional and bilateral issues Tuesday with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in New Delhi.

Official sources here said the two leaders, who met for private talks before formal talks between the delegations of the two countries, discussed developments in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan as well as defense cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow.

The Russian president, who arrived here late Monday evening for a four-day state visit, held informal talks with Vajpayee last night soon after his arrival.

Following their delegation-level talks, the two sides signed nine agreements with an aim to enhance their bilateral relations in various fields.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Kklebanov and Indian Minister of Science and Technology signed the agreement on integrated long-term program of cooperation in science and technology.

Klebanov signed another Inter-Governmental agreement in the field of agriculture with Indian Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar.

Leading a 70-member high-power delegation which includes Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov, Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev, Putin will also pay a two-day visit to India's biggest commercial city of Bombay, 1400 kilometers southwest of here, beginning on Thursday.

A Russian presidential visit, due for several years, could not materialize because of the poor health of Putin's predecessor Boris Yeltsin, who was last here in 1993.
