No Fatalities in Toxic Chemical Accident in Shaanxi
No fatalities were reported after a toxic chemical leakage incident occurred on September 29 in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
At about 2:50 am on September 29, a tank wagon carrying 5.2 tons of sodium cyanide veered off the road at the Tielingpu Town section in Danfeng County and plunged into the Wuguan River, spilling the toxic chemicals into the river.
Emergency measures were taken to build an embankment to block the contaminated water from spreading. Drugs were then released into the river to decompose and neutralize the chemicals.
The local hygiene and disease control department rushed in to provide first-aid medicine to residents near the river, and prevent people from using the river water.
The leakage site was guarded around-the-clock. Rescue workers have attempted to clear the contaminated sullage and sandstone. The wreckage of the wagon has been removed from the site for biochemical treatment.
The polluted area will continue to be under strict control and monitoring. Environmental experts have been asked to devise long-term anti-pollution plans to recover the damage of the local environment.
