Armed Robber Arrested in Chongqing

Police in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, have arrested Zhang Jun, the principal culprit in an armed robbery in Changde, central China's Hunan Province.

Zhang was caught a couple of days ago when he met with his mistress. His four mistresses and another accomplice have also been arrested.

Zhang along with three other accomplices were responsible for ambushing an armored car, killing seven people and wounding four others in downtown Changde on September 1.

Police had detained 13 suspects and seized two pistols, seven shotguns, two grenades, two self-made bombs and 1,949 bullets.

Police sources said that the gang is suspected of committing 12 bank robberies in Hunan and Hubei provinces and Chongqing municipality over the past seven years. Other suspected crimes committed by the gang include the killing of 22 people and wounding of 20 others, stealing 230,000 yuan (approximately 25,300 U.S. dollars) and cash and jewelry worth 4.85 million yuan (approximately 584,000 U.S. dollars).
