National Day Celebrations Nationwide

Chinese people nationwide participated in a variety of activities today to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC).

In Beijing, 300 disabled children from neighboring Tianjin City were among tens of thousands of participants in this morning's flag-raising ceremony at Tian'anmen Square.

"Although I can't hear the National Song, I can still feel the strong power of our motherland," said a deaf girl.

More than 700 overseas Chinese from 20 countries and regions attended a grand National Day celebration held by the Beijing Municipal Government today.

The China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification also hosted a feast to gather council leaders based in over 20 European countries, Australia and Brazil.

Shanghai, the country's largest industrial and trade center, was filled with waving red flags, colorful balloons and flowers.

People, young and old, sang song after song, to express their happiness. A total of 138 square performances will be staged during the seven-day holiday.

In Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, millions of travelers are ready to depart for many different tour destinations, including Japan, southeastern Asian countries, Hong Kong, Macao, and other places in China.

The Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, China's fourth biggest, in southwest China's Sichuan province, was crowded with travelers from all over China.

Southwestern Airlines has provided 600 additional flights to meet the huge demand during the National Day holiday, said an official of the company.
