Macao SAR Government Celebrates National Day

Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), said Sunday in Macao that the principle of "one country, two systems" and the Macao Basic Law have been carried out well since the SAR was established nine months ago.

The chief executive made the remark at an official reception to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

He said public security in the SAR has been greatly improved, the economy is being revitalized and the civil service is in sound operation.

"But we must see that road is twisty and future task is arduous," Edmund Ho said. "We have the responsibility and resolution to meet challenges and overcome difficulties step by step and achieve progress continuously."

The chief executive said the fate of Macao has been closely linked up with the motherland. Macao residents have contributed to the motherland's modernization, while Macao's space of development is expanded with the strong backing of the motherland.

He noted that over the past two decades the national economy has maintained a high speed of growth and the standard of living of the people has been improved greatly.

"We feel very happy and proud about the increasing strength and prosperity of the motherland," the chief executive said.

More than 1,000 guests, including Wang Qiren, director of the Liaison Office of the central government in the Macao SAR, attended the reception.
