Macao People Celebrate China's 51st Birthday

More than 1,000 people of various walks of life in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) held a grand gathering Sunday to mark the 51st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Ma Man Kei, presidium chairman of a local preparatory committee for celebrating the anniversary, said at the gathering that the motherland has scored remarkable achievements in economic and social development over the past 51 years.

In the new century, the country will further improve the well-to-do life of the people and strive to fulfil modernization, he said.

"On the occasion of the 51st birthday of the motherland, we are pleased to see that, over the past nine months, the SAR has a good beginning in carrying out the principles of 'one country, two systems", Macao people governing Macao and a high degree of autonomy in Macao," Ma Man Kei said.

"All facts have shown that the our Chinese compatriots in Macao are capable of administering the Macao SAR well," he said.

Performers from local art bodies and schools presented singing, dancing and musical performance to eulogize the motherland.

Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao SAR, and Wang Qiren, director of the Liaison Office of the central government in the Macao SAR, attended the gathering.
