China to Reform Urban Medicare SystemChina has made massive progress in urban medicare system reform during the 1996-2000 period, and the management of medical organizations has been strengthened, said an official from the Ministry of Health (MOH) Saturday.By the year 2000, the average lifespan of Chinese people will reach 71.8 years, up 0.9 year to that of 1995. The mortality rate of pregnant women has also went down. The official noted that China has strengthened disease control, health education and has succeeded in curbing the spread of various infections. In 2000, MOH and other seven ministries jointly issued "regulations for urban medicare system reform," which asked local governments to divide medical organizations as profitable and non-profitable ones. The government will give out different tax and price policies according to the function of medical organizations. |
