It will primarily be a deep-water exit to the western part of Shenzhen Harbor. In the first phase, the waterway will be able to accommodate new types of container ships. The new waterway will have a total length of 20.2 km and will be 180 meters wide and 13.5 meters deep. The total cost of the project is estimated to reach about 680 million yuan. The construction of the waterway project will take three years. The project was listed by the State Council as one of major cross-border infrastructure projects between Hong Kong and the inland areas, which was decided by the Chinese and British sides in 1995. The two sides held several rounds of discussions on the construction of the waterway in May 1995. The project was approved by the then State Planning Commission, now the State Development Planning Commission, in 1997. |
