Smuggling of Pirated CDs Seized

Anti-smuggling officers from Gongbei Customs of south China's Guangdong Province recently tracked down and seized a total of 900,000 pirated compact disks (CDs).

It is the largest case involving smuggling of pirated CD the customs house has dealt with since the beginning of the year.

Customs sources said that on the early morning of September 17, when anti-smuggling officers from Gongbei Customs were doing routine patrol near the estuary of Pearl River, they spotted a suspicious fishing boat heading quickly towards Huidong of Guangdong from the sea waters of Hong Kong, so they started to track down and chase the boat.

After getting aboard the boat, the officers found that the boat was actually a special smuggling cargo ship made of iron sheets, all the ship's cabins were designed as cargo holds, and the ship was equipped with high-speed motors.

In addition to seizing 900 cartons containing 900,000 pirated CDs, the anti-smuggling officers also confiscated other smuggled commodities like batteries and films.

Gongbei Customs, with headquarters in Zhuhai, the nearest mainland city to Macao, has seized 2.7 million pirated CDs in its anti-smuggling drive on the sea since the beginning of the year.
