Palestinians Declare Day of Mourning After Clashes at Holy SitesPalestinian cabinet members designated Saturday to be a day of mourning throughout Palestinian areas in the wake of a clash Friday between Israelis and Palestnians, and officials said a full strike of shops and services would also take place. The decision was announced after a meeting of the Palestinian cabinet in Ramallah Friday. At least four people died and as many as 200 were wounded when Israeli police clashed with Palestinians coming out of Friday prayers. The violence erupted after Muslim noon prayers at a spot Muslims call the Haram al-Sharif, the Noble Sanctuary, and the Jews, the Temple Mount. The holy site became a bloody battlefield as rock-throwing Palestinians and Israeli police armed with rubber-coated steel bullets clashed in the hours leading up to the Jewish New Year. |
