Yak Industry Rises in Tibet

Ground has been broken September 29 in the suburban Doilungdeqen County of Tibet for the construction of the food production base of the West Region Foodstuffs Development Co. Ltd., the largest yak foodstuffs development project in Tibet.

A stud stock unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Yak has always been a transport and farming tool for local farmers and herdsmen. With the improvement of Tibetan highway transport condition and the popularization and application of modern agricultural production tools, the transport function of yak has been weakened step by step. However, yak-related art and craft tourist products have enjoyed brisk markets and the yak industry has rising gradually along with the development of the market economy.

At present, there are a total of 4 million yaks in Tibet. The average annual income of herdsmen exceeded 1,300 yuan last year.
