DPRK Special Envoy to Visit Washington

A top defense official of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will visit Washington on October 9-12 as the special envoy of DPRK leader Kim Jong II, the State Department said on Friday.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said in a statement that President Bill Clinton will meet National Defense Commission first vice chairman, Cho Myong Nok, in the course of the visit.

Kim is chairman of the National Defense Commission.

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the official host of the visit, will have substantive discussions between the two delegations.

"Both the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea believe that Special Envoy Cho's visit constitutes an important step forward in improving bilateral relations and will contribute to the goal of ending the long standing state of hostility on the Korean Peninsula," the statement said.
