China to Use Computer Networks to Help Import and Export

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC) announced Friday that starting from October 1, a nationwide computer network of import-and-export-license checking system will become effective with the aim of improving efficiency and curbing smuggling.

Launched by MOFTEC in collaboration with the General Administration of Customs (GAC), the on-line checking system will improve the efficiency of China's foreign trade and customs clearance management, ensure a more open and transparent management of import and expert licenses, and crack down on illegal activities such as smuggling and arbitrage.

The on-line checking system were put into use on a trial basis at 13 customs including Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen last year. It has been affirmed effective by the customs and the traders as well.
