Largest Bridge over Yangtze Finished

Wuhu Yangtze Bridge, the largest one that spans over this longest river in China in terms of construction scale, has been completed in Wuhu, Anhui Province in east China.

The bridge, one of the key programs of the country's Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000), is also the last one built over the river this century. It was completed six months ahead of schedule.

With the main span the largest of its kind in China, the low-tower stayed-cable bridge is for both road and railroad traffic. The road portion of the bridge is 6 kilometers long and the railroad portion is 10 kilometers.

Costing a total of 4.6 billion yuan (about 554 million U.S. dollars), jointly invested by the Ministry of Railway and Anhui Provincial Government, the bridge improves the transportation status of Anhui Province which is divided into two parts as the Yangtze River flows through the middle, said Wang Mingzhen, deputy mayor of Wuhu.

It will also improve China's road and railroad networks to connect the north and the south, and promote economic growth in Anhui and eastern China, Wang added.
