Chinese Scientists Raise New Concept About Desalination of Seawater

Recently, Chinese scientists proposed the use of nuclear energy as heat source to desalinate seawater, thereby providing a new idea for desalinizing seawater on a large scale and tackling problem of fresh water shortage in China's coastal areas.

While people are anxious about the drought and water shortage, experts fix their eyes on the ocean, the desalination of seawater has attracted people's greater attention. It's predicted that China will come to the period of serious water shortage in 2010, so it's an urgent task at present to develop large-scale and low-cost desalination technology.

According to experts, 11 nuclear power stations in the world have been installed with seawater desalination devices to supply potable water and water for power plants. Under the condition of technology maturation of core nuclear reactor abroad, technically, there is no obstacle to the normal operation of desalination by nuclear power

Experts also point out that the desalination of seawater by nuclear power has a bright future for comprehensive utilization for the distilled water of high purity desalinated from seawater can be used in industrial boilers and as supply water for nuclear power plants, besides, the desalinized water can be used to produce quality chemical fertilizer to irrigate paddy rice and wheat, etc.
