Chinese Industry of Flowers and Plants Develops Apace

The Secretary-general of China Flower Association Jiang Weixian said September 27 that China's industry of flowers and plants has developed rapidly in recent years due to the great market demand and strategic readjustment of China's agricultural structure.

At the news briefing of Kunming International Flower Festival of China held on September 27, he said that in 1999, the area planted to flowers reached 122,400 hectares, 30,000 hectares more than that of 1998; the domestic trade volume of flowers topped 54 billion yuan, an increase of 43.7-billin yuan over 1998; the export volume reached US$260 million, while it was only US$ 70 million in 1998; there were 2,066 wholesale markets of flowers, an increase of 1,000 over 1998.

In recent years, both government organizations and citizens have mounting demand for flowers and plants. At the same time, the government made strategic adjustment to the structure of agriculture. Besides, the large-scale western region development and the World Horticulture Exposition held in Yunnan last year have also given a big impetus to the development of the industry of flowers and plants.
