China Scored Great Achievement in Super-yield Hybrid Rice

The experimentation of China's super-yield hybrid rice 64S/E32 and 64S/911 conducted at Longshan, Hunan province shows that the 1,075 mu of experimental plot has produced a per-mu yield of 703.5 kg of rice according to the Ministry of Agriculture. This manifests that the sort of crossbred rice can yield high in larger areas, telling the great achievement scored by China in the study of super-yield hybrid rice.

The result also indicates that the per-mu yield of 64S/ E32 and 64S/ 911 hybrid rice has already been up to the quota set by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1997 for the year 2000.

The short-stalk 64S/ E32 and 64S/ 911 was cultivated jointly by the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Science and the State Hybrid Rice Engineering Research Center in 1998.

In 1999, the "super rice" grown on the 100-mu plots of land in 14 areas and one on a1000-mu plot in Jiangsu and Hunan provinces harvested as much as 700 kg per mu. Yunnan cultivated 3.63 mu short-stalk 64S/E32 rice, reaping 1,102.7 kg per-mu, of which a single spot of 1.08 mu yielded 1,138 kg of rice. According to experts Hunan saw the yield of rice on the 100-mu plots of land in 12 areas and 1000-mu plots in three areas exceed 700 kg per mu, while the per-mu yield in Xinyang, Henan Province scored 708.7 kg.

Experts say that the achievement has proved to be a great contribution to the study in China's super-yield hybrid rice and will play a significant role in guaranteeing China's safety in grain supply in the 21st century.
