New Sichuan University Set Up

China announced the establishment of an new Sichuan University Friday, merging the former Sichuan University and Huaxi Medical Sciences University.

Lu Fuyuan, a vice-minister of education, made the announcement here today at the university's inaugural ceremony. Lu Tiecheng, president of the former Sichuan University, will head the new university.

The new Sichuan University has more than 12,000 academics and employees, including ten members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, some 328 Ph.D. supervisors, and more than 900 professors.

The university will have more than 42,000 students.
